Anthem Inc., the parent company of University System of Georgia (USG) health insurance provider BlueCross and BlueShield of Georgia (BCBSGa), has been the victim of a security breach.

BCBSGa recently notified the USG that cyberattackers unlawfully accessed Anthem’s member data. This member data potentially includes names, birth dates, member ID and Social Security numbers, addresses, and employment information of current and former BCBSGa members across the System. Based on what Anthem has been able to determine at this time, there is no evidence that banking, credit card, or confidential medical information were targeted or compromised. This breach may affect an estimated 80 million members.

Anthem and BCBSGa continue to research the extent of the attack and the impact on USG employees. Anthem has said it will individually notify current and former members whose information has been accessed, and will provide credit monitoring and identity protection services free of charge. This is in addition to coverage you may have through one of two identity theft programs offered by Georgia Tech.

Anthem has created a website (www.anthemfacts.com) and a toll-free hotline (1-877-263-7995) for current and former members to obtain more information.

Georgia Tech employees concerned about the breach may contact: Elizabeth Dayal at Elizabeth.Dayal@ohr.gatech.edu or 404-894-0493 for last names A-L, or Yolanda McDaniel at Yolanda.Mcdaniel@ohr.gatech.edu or 404-385-0607 for last names M-Z.

Students enrolled in StudentBlue (a BCBSGa-administered insurance plan) may contact: Jennifer White at Jennifer.White@health.gatech.edu or 404-894-0633.

Georgia Tech’s Office of Human Resources will continue to provide updates as more detailed information becomes available.
