THE FLATS – Georgia Tech athletics continues to excel in NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR), according to data released by the NCAA on Wednesday.

APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. It measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. The most recent multiyear scores are based on the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years.

APR scores are measured on a scale of 1,000 with the threshold for penalties set at 930. In the latest APR data, four Georgia Tech teams (women’s cross country, golf, men’s swimming & diving and volleyball) posted perfect multiyear scores of 1,000 and each of the Yellow Jackets’ 15 programs came in at 963 or higher.

Twelve of Georgia Tech’s 15 programs boast multiyear APR scores above the national average for their respective sports, while two others come within five points of the national average (baseball — one, women’s tennis — four). Nine Georgia Tech teams have multiyear APR scores that are 10 or more points higher than the national average for their sports, led by men’s swimming & diving (1,000 — 21 points higher than the national average of 979) and football (983 — 17 points higher than the national average of 966).

Additionally, 10 of Tech’s 15 programs recorded a perfect single-year APR for 2015-16: women’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, golf, softball, men’s swimming & diving, women’s swimming & diving, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and volleyball.

“It’s a great point of pride for Georgia Tech athletics to rank among the nation’s leaders in APR,” Georgia Tech director of athletics Todd Stansbury said. “As I said last week when the Public Recognition Awards were announced, our APR success is due to our student-athletes’, coaches’ and academic support staff’s dedication to our mission of developing young people who will change the world. I thank them and congratulate them for their hard work and achievements.”

Last week, the four Georgia Tech programs with perfect multiyear APR scores (women’s cross country, golf, men’s swimming & diving and volleyball) received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking among the top 10 nationally in their respective sports. The Yellow Jackets’ golf team earned its 12th-straight Public Recognition Award, continuing its streak of earning the honor every year since the inception of the APR program in 2006. Among Power 5 conferences, head coach Bruce Heppler’s program is one of two men’s golf teams and 14 programs overall that have earned all 12 Public Recognition Awards.
