Financial Management Training Program Expands

After an extended pilot program, Georgia Tech is rolling out the Financial Management Knowledge Development (FMKD) online training program for all Georgia Tech employees who have financial administration responsibilities.

Beginning May 1, employees who receive access to Georgia Tech’s financial systems will be required to participate in the FMKD program. Once system access is granted, employees will receive a notification to enroll in the FMKD program including the courses they are expected to complete. Employees will have 60 days to complete the specific courses, which are tailored to the system for which access has been granted. Training topics include basic accounting, procure-to-pay, HR/payroll, travel and expense management, and the financial management of sponsored grants and contracts. Employees with existing access to these current enterprise systems will be “grandfathered in” and will not be required to complete the program unless they change positions.

The goal of the program, which was developed by financial subject matter experts throughout the Institute in collaboration with Human Resources’ Workplace Learning and Professional Development group, is to help all members of Georgia Tech’s financial community enhance their knowledge of Tech’s dynamic business operations and management processes. Employees will then be better equipped to navigate financial management complexities and contribute to the effective and responsible stewardship of the Institute’s resources.

Feedback on the pilot program has been very positive and 95 percent of survey respondents indicated that the quality of the training videos was either “excellent” or “good.”

“This series is vital to the development of finance professionals at Georgia Tech,” said Alan Katz, assistant dean for Finance and Operations, College of Computing. “By investing in its financial function, the Institute also invests in its people and ensures they have the necessary training to stay current, consistent, and compliant.”

Suggestions from pilot program participants have been incorporated into the program, including providing supporting materials for reference after completion of the course. The training program will be updated periodically, especially in coordination with the upcoming transformation to the new financial administration system from Workday.
