Seventeen Georgia Tech students were selected to be part of the 2021 Millennium Fellowship, a joint leadership development program of the United Nations Academic Impact and the Millennium Campus Network (MCN). The selective fellowship is a semester-long leadership program that will engage the fellows through an experiential curriculum on cultivating core values and sharing best practices.

The UN Millennium Fellowship provides a great networking opportunity. I’ve had the chance to meet new students pursuing starkly different social impact goals, learning a great deal about how they approach philanthropy, volunteering, and community engagement,” Georgia Tech recipient Jon Saad-Falcon said.

This year, 25,501 young leaders from 2,209 campuses applied to join the Class of 2021. Only 120+ campuses worldwide (6%) were selected to host the 2,000+ Millennium Fellows. The Class of 2021 is bold, innovative, and inclusive. Altogether, 52 Georgia Tech students have received Millennium Fellowships in the last four years.

"Students' ongoing pursuit of the Millennium Fellowships reflects Georgia Tech's larger commitment to pursuing solutions on a global scale. The fellowship supports real-world initiatives in sustainable development, providing leadership training and a community of like-minded recipients," said Shannon Dobranski, director of Pre-Graduate and Pre-Professional Advising. "Each year, the Millennium Fellowship helps Georgia Tech students invested in sustainability to identify and connect with each other. It also helps them to refine and articulate their own goals related to sustainability and the impact they hope to have on their community now and in the future."

Together with like-minded students from other institutions around the world, these fellows will grow as leaders ready to deliver on our mission to improve the human condition."

The recipients will meet for the first time in the upcoming weeks. Another recipient and Class of 2022 student, Catherine Moore is looking forward to being there. “I have always been interested in promoting clean energy and energy resiliency but haven’t been sure of the best ways to do that as a student," she said. "I’m really excited about getting involved with the Millennium Fellowship at Georgia Tech so that I can utilize their network and resources to expand upon my goals and achieve clean energy education within our community.”

Biomedical engineering student and president of Tech’s Engineers Without Borders, Shovan Bhatia, says that “through collaboration with the other GT Millennium Fellows, I remain committed to expanding this outreach to ensure as many people as possible at Georgia Tech are aware of our efforts to actively carry out sustainable practices in our everyday lives.”

After fulfilling the fellowship, recipients can join the Millennium Alumni Community, which includes more than 7,000 alumni from over 300 universities across the globe. The fellowship facilitates lifelong connections and ways for recipients to continue their social impact for years to come.
